Use Product Strategy or Roadmap?

Both the Product strategy and the roadmap are planning tools but the roadmap is for me the tactical level of what is described and decided on a strategic level in the Product strategy.

Both the Product strategy and the roadmap are planning tools but the roadmap is for me the tactical level of what is described and decided on a strategic level in the Product strategy.

The Roadmap and the Product strategy are Strategic assets in the Tolpagorni vocabulary. This means tools that you can use when taking the everyday decisions that actually implement the strategy. Creating strategies is a challenge but the real trick is to be able to make the organization take decisions every day in line with the strategies decisions made. This is when it is useful to take a look at the strategic assets.

One challenge when working with Product strategies and Roadmaps is to keep the scope limited and to the point. Too often I see 150 slide presentations both presenting Roadmaps as well as Product strategies. Who takes the time to read such a document and how do you digest it? Not a tool to be used when taking everyday decisions in my mind.

There is research related to the number objects to be presented in a roadmap also related to the time perspective. There should be something similar with Product Strategy I think! Have you seen anything in that area?

Looking forward hearing your thoughts on the matter!
